Nissa checked on me throughout the day and the castle pixies lit the faery torches when the sun went down. I continued to read as the realm moved around me. I don’t know how late it was when I closed the book but tears streamed down my face as I turned to see my mother standing just inside my room. She rushed forward and embraced me, stroking my hair and whispering, “I know, I know.”

“How could things get so bad? How did we lose so much of this history? I don’t understand. The realm could have been saved years ago.”

“Yes, child, but would we’ve learned the lessons we have? I didn’t know why the goddess put us through so much before, but after seeing the land come to life for you and Kallan, now I think I do.”

“How do I know that he is the one to help repair everything? I don’t even know what I’m supposed to do to repair the land.” I leaned back. The words I had read over the last two days swirling around in my head. Things only got worse as time went on. The light court turned from Amera and Rystus, and the dark court began to grow, each generation stronger than the last. They started expanding their territory, their corrupted magic turning the creatures and land into disfigured ideas of what they were. The Goddess Amera prophesied that land would hibernate, taking its magic with it until two souls from rival courts put aside differences and united together to rebuild the realm. We would know that couple when the land awoke and celebrated.

“Honey, because the land celebrated. Faery’s magic awoke, even if it was for just a moment.”

The look of hope on her face scared me. The prophecy scared me. My father’s insistence that I marry scared me. “I don’t know how to repair the land,” I repeated quietly. It was all too much and I couldn’t handle anymore. “I need to walk.”

“I’ll come with you,” Mother declared.

I put a hand up to stop her. “No, I need to be alone.”

“Honey, you’ve been alone for two days. You need to be around someone, talk to someone.”

“No, I’ve been with that book for two days, and everyone who is in it. I need to be alone, to process.” I left her. Her voice followed me down the hall but her words didn’t reach me. Enrich, always vigilant, kept pace behind me. He kept his distance and silence.
